8 Prenatal Massage Myths That Might Be Keeping You From Feeling Better

Massage is one of the most nurturing forms of self-care—especially during pregnancy. And yet being in the indurstry for almost two decades I find myself hearing a lot “myths” out there.

We wanted to address some of those here, in case it happens to be the tipping point to you booking yourself a reset sesh.

Let’s clear the air.

Here are some of the most common massage myths—especially for prenatal clients—gently busted by science, experience, and a whole lot of care.

Myth #1: “Massage Isn’t Safe in the First Trimester”

This is probably the #1 thing we hear.

The Truth?
Prenatal massage can be safe in the first trimester when performed by a trained professional who understands pregnancy physiology.

In the past, massage was often avoided early in pregnancy out of extreme caution—not because of proven risk. Today, many prenatal-trained therapists safely work with first-trimester clients using gentle techniques and proper positioning. Non-At Risk pregnancies will greatly benefit from getting in for even just one massage. Can support your fatigue, nervous system & headaches if you start to experience these.

At Luna, we always adapt sessions based on your comfort, health history, and where you are in your pregnancy.

If you’re ever unsure—just ask. You deserve clarity and confidence.

Massage can be safe for first trimester in pregnancy.

Myth #2: “Massage Can Cause a Miscarriage”

Let’s say this clearly:

Massage does not cause miscarriage. Assuming your therapist isn’t intentionally working the womb in an aggressive or harmful way.

Early pregnancy losses often happen due to chromosomal or developmental factors—things completely outside of anyone’s control.

There is no scientific evidence showing that professional prenatal massage causes miscarriage.

This myth has lingered for years and unnecessarily scares people away from support during a vulnerable time.

You are not “putting your pregnancy at risk” by taking care of your body. And if you are concerned, a shoulder/Neck session can get those “spots” worked out while also being aware of your very real fears and concerns.

Myth #3: “You Will Be Uncomfortable During Pregnancy—It’s Just Part of It”

Back pain. Hip pain. Sciatic pain. Swollen feet. Tight shoulders. Headaches.

Many pregnant people are told:
“Yep, that’s just pregnancy.”

TheTruth:
Discomfort may be common—but it doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it.

Massage can help:

Reduce muscle tension

  • Improve circulation

  • Ease joint stress

  • Support better sleep

  • Calm the nervous system

  • Reduce stress hormones

Feeling better during pregnancy is not “extra.”
It’s part of healthy, supportive care.

And you are growing life, darn it. If that doesn’t qualify you for regular bodywork, what does?

Myth #4: “Deep Pressure Is Dangerous When You’re Pregnant”

Many people worry that firm pressure could harm their baby.

💆🏽‍♀️ Truth:
Safe prenatal massage focuses on intentional, informed pressure—not “no pressure at all.”

A trained therapist knows:

  • Which areas to avoid

  • How to adapt pressure

  • How to position your body safely

  • How pregnancy changes circulation and joints

You can absolutely enjoy effective, therapeutic work during pregnancy—it just needs to be done thoughtfully.

Myth #5: “Massage Is Just for Relaxation”

Don’t get us wrong—relaxation is wonderful, and necessary more than maybe we want to admit.
But massage is so much more than a luxury.

Truth BOMB:
Massage has real physical benefits, including:

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Improved blood flow

  • Decreased cortisol (stress hormone)

  • Better posture support

  • Muscle recovery

  • Nervous system regulation

During pregnancy, this translates into better sleep, more comfort, and a calmer mind—things every growing family deserves.

Myth #6: “You Should Avoid Massage If You Have Swelling”

Swelling (edema) is common in pregnancy, especially in the legs and feet.

Truth:

Gentle lymphatic-focused massage can actually help reduce swelling when done properly.

A skilled prenatal therapist uses light, rhythmic techniques to encourage fluid movement—never aggressive pressure.

If swelling is sudden, severe, or paired with other symptoms, we always recommend checking in with your provider first.

Myth #7: “Massage Will Make Me Sore for Days”

Some people avoid massage because they’re afraid of “massage hangovers.”

But really,
Soreness usually happens when pressure isn’t matched to your body’s needs.

At Luna, sessions are customized to:

  • Your stage of pregnancy

  • Your pain levels

  • Your stress load

  • Your energy

  • Your preferences

Our goal is for you to leave feeling supported—not beaten up.

And if you ever feel unsure? We will adjust.

Myth #8 (& Not Just For Prenatal): “You Need to Be in Pain to ‘Need’ Massage”

You don’t have to “earn” bodywork by being miserable first.
Massage is preventive care, not just crisis care. You use your body more than you use your car- yet we go in for maintance check ups and fill ups there. We are rough on our bodies. We work hard in our bodies.

It helps:

  • Prevent chronic pain

  • Support posture

  • Improve movement

  • Reduce burnout

  • Protect mental health

  • Maintain mobility

You deserve care before you’re overwhelmed and in too much pain.
