Daylight Saving Time, Seasonal Fatigue & How Acupuncture Can Help

The time change, tired mamas, and finding a little balance in the darker months.

We all feel it, the subtle shift toll it takes on our body when we set our clocks back an hour. I was walking away from Luna the other day I noticed a few people in the neighborhood streets doing yard work and it was signifincally getting darker by the minute. I was at first impressed with them doing it when it was baissclay time to go to bed (JK) but then I thought about how inspiriing it was to make sure you were getting some outside time, staying up on house chorse ( raking those leaves up) and chattign with neighbors like it was summer time. I don’t know how long they were out there for, but It got me thinking about how many people are like me and instantly start heading inside around 4 PM vs. forcing yourself to stay out just a little longer and expanding your day time (since 4 PM is still technically afternoon) it got me thinking about the other natural habits we start doing once we turn our clocks back.

One minute we're picking up the kids from school, thinking about dinner, homework, and whatever else needs to happen before bedtime. The next, it's pitch black outside, everyone is tired (or somehow bouncing off the walls), and all we want to do is curl up under a blanket and call it a day.

Welcome to November

Daylight saving time has officially ended, and while gaining an extra hour sounds wonderful in theory, our bodies don't always get the memo. Especially when you have little ones who couldn't care less what the clock says. They're still waking up at their usual time, only now it's an hour earlier. And somehow that extra hour of sleep we were promised has disappeared before we even had a chance to enjoy it.

But there's something else happening beneath the surface. Our bodies are incredibly connected to natural light. It's one of the main ways our internal clocks, known as our circadian rhythms, know when to wake up, feel alert, wind down, and rest. When the clocks change and daylight becomes scarce, those rhythms can get a little out of sync.

You might notice you're more tired than usual, struggling to get going in the morning, feeling a little more irritable, or craving every carbohydrate in sight. Maybe you're having trouble sleeping even though you're exhausted. Or perhaps you're finding yourself feeling a little down without really knowing why.

And here's something worth asking yourself: When was the last time you checked in with how you were feeling, rather than how everyone else in your household was doing?

As moms, we're often so busy managing everyone else's rhythms that we forget we have our own. We're keeping track of school schedules, lunches, after-school activities, appointments, and bedtime routines. We're making sure everyone has their jackets, gets enough sleep, and eats something resembling a vegetable. Meanwhile, our own bodies are quietly asking us to slow down.

There's a natural shift that happens as we move into fall and winter. Less daylight can influence our sleep-wake cycles, mood, and energy levels. For some people, these changes are subtle. For others, they can feel like a heavy blanket that settles in and doesn't quite lift.

And while we can't change when the sun sets, we can change how we support ourselves through it.

This is one of the reasons I love acupuncture during the seasonal transitions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the changing seasons are an invitation to pay attention to the body's needs. Fall and winter are associated with slowing down, restoring energy, and turning inward. Something that sounds lovely in theory, but isn't always easy when life keeps moving at full speed.

Acupuncture offers an opportunity to do just that. It's a chance to lie down, be still, and allow someone else to take care of you for a change.

Beyond the quiet time, acupuncture may also help support some of the things that tend to feel harder during this season. Research suggests acupuncture may improve sleep quality for some people and may help reduce stress-related symptoms. Some people also find it helpful for tension, headaches, and feeling more settled in their bodies. While it's not a cure for seasonal depression or a replacement for getting adequate daylight, it can be a supportive part of your overall wellness routine.

And sometimes, that support is exactly what we need.

Maybe you've noticed you're snapping at your kids more quickly than usual. Maybe you're waking up at 3 AM thinking about tomorrow's to-do list. Or maybe you just feel off. Nothing dramatic, nothing you can quite put your finger on, but you know you haven't been feeling like yourself.

What would it look like to give yourself a little attention before you're completely running on empty?

It doesn't have to mean overhauling your routine or adding another complicated self-care practice to your already full calendar. Sometimes it's as simple as stepping outside for morning light, taking a short walk after school pickup, creating a gentler bedtime routine, or scheduling an acupuncture appointment where you can rest without anyone needing anything from you.

And perhaps most importantly, giving yourself permission to move a little slower.

We're so accustomed to pushing through exhaustion, especially as parents. But just because the calendar is full doesn't mean our bodies aren't affected by the changing seasons.

So as we settle into these shorter days, I invite you to ask yourself: What is my body asking for right now? More rest? Better sleep? A little quiet? Some support?

You don't have to wait until you're completely depleted to answer that question.

At Luna Wellness, our acupuncture sessions are designed to meet you where you are. Whether you're navigating restless nights, stress, seasonal fatigue, or simply looking for a moment to reconnect with yourself, we're here to offer thoughtful, personalized care.

The days may be getting shorter, but that doesn't mean we have to spend the season feeling drained.
